Yahoo Music

Aug-4-2008 By tyralyn

I don’t know how many of you use Yahoo! Music to buy mp3’s. I know there is at least one person who does, so I thought I would share the following bit of information. Yahoo Music is closing on September 30, 2008. This means that if you have purchased music through them, you will not be able to play them because of the DRM on it.

They intend to take their DRM servers offline when they take the store down. So if you have music from Yahoo, you need to burn it to CD then rip it back to MP3 format or you’ll lose it forever. Sucks, doesn’t it? DRM sucks, but it’s what it’s come down to thanks to the RIAA.

Looking for an alternative to Yahoo? Don’t go with iTunes. I’m sorry but they’re just as bad. I’d recommend Amazon, honestly. They don’t DRM their music, that I know of. And they can be imported to whatever you need to be used on whatever device you own. So yeah. If you use Yahoo Music, you’ve been warned.

John Fleming For Congress

Mar-28-2008 By tyralyn

I’m not overly politically inclined most of the time. I feel that we should support whomever we feel is best suited for their seat. I also feel that we should support whomever gets the seat, whether we like them or not. Now, with that said, I have to say that I’m liking some of what I see when I look at Louisiana’s 4th Congressional district candidate, Dr John Fleming.

He is taking a stance to help the people. He wants to control illegal immigration, which is a major problem in almost every state now. People are crossing the border illegally and situating themselves in jobs that could be taken by capable Americans who can’t find work. John Fleming feels that the borders need to be secured and that illegal aliens be required to return to their home, rather than giving them amnesty. He also wants to cut off funds to states that consider themselves to be sanctuaries for illegal immigrants.

He wants to cut spending and lower taxes, but he doesn’t want to compromise the path to defeating terrorism. He feels that the people who need the most help should be the ones to get it. He wants to help Americans pull themselves above the poverty line, where so many of us have fallen, especially those affected by Katrina.

The only thing that I don’t like when looking at John Fleming is that he wants to protect the right to life and traditional values. I can understand his standpoint, but I don’t agree with him. I feel that everyone, no matter their life choice, should have the right to choose to live their life as they see fit.

These are just a few things to consider if you live in Louisiana and are considering voting John Fleming for congress.

Carl Karcher turned hot dog stand into Carl’s Jr. chain

Carl N. Karcher, who parlayed a $325 investment in a hot dog cart into one of the largest hamburger chains in the western U.S., died Friday. He was 90.

The founder of the Carl’s Jr. fast-food chain suffered from Parkinson’s disease and was being treated for pneumonia when he died in Fullerton, Calif., said Beth Mansfield, a spokeswoman for CKE Restaurants Inc.

Mr. Karcher, a deeply religious father of 12, was famous in the fast-food industry for his rags-to-riches story - a tale tainted in later years by an insider trading scandal and feuds with his board of directors.

Mr. Karcher was working as a bread-truck driver in Los Angeles when he decided to borrow $311 on the 1941 Plymouth Super Deluxe he owned with his bride, Margaret, added the rest in cash and bought a pushcart hot dog stand.

One cart soon became four, and by the end of World War II, Mr. Karcher had opened his first restaurant, Carl’s Drive-In barbecue, in Anaheim.

He opened the first Carl’s Jr. - named “Jr.” to distinguish it from his full-service eatery - in 1956.

Mr. Karcher’s initial success began to falter in the 1980s when he took the company public. Carl’s Jr. locations in Texas and Arizona failed, ending his dream of becoming a national chain.

Today, Carl’s Jr. has more than 1,000 locations across the West.

Mr. Karcher is survived by 11 children, 51 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.
